Well hopefully this will be the first of many more entries to come. We are not fishing experts here, nor pros for that matter - but we still get out and manage to have a great time.
Late last week I had the opportunity to get outside and so I took it. The Texas hill country abounds with many excellent fly fishing destinations. Yet, many of the destinations near the city limits are often overlooked by anglers. These fishing holes within the city can offer a great afternoon of fishing close to home.

http://www.austinexplorer.com/Hiking/HikeDetails.aspx?HikeID=12

Bull Creek off Loop 360, surrounded by the west Austin burbs is just a few minutes north from Lake Austin. The crowds are mostly reserved for the weekends, so if you can find your way out of the office early on a weekday, it’s worth the trip. I was lucky enough to meet up with a good friend Nate, who recently started fly fishing. It only took me a year to convince him to pick up a fly rod! We had a great day of hiking from pool to pool along the creek, and found ourselves pulling in hand-sized panfish one after another.
With all the panfish action, we were still consumed with casting toward the 8” to 12” bass who were popping out of cover every fews minutes to see what was going on in their pool. Even though we didn’t land any of the bass, we still had a great time with the panfish. The top-water hopper with a trailing beaded nymph seem to produce the most action from the panfish though-out the day. I’ll get back to you when I find out what those bass are after.
